"Manifestations" is an album of quiet tones that possess an astonishing power. Contemplative music in the best sense, with a Spanish-Mediterranean flair and a pleasant Pat Metheny vibe that settles in comfortably, even though Jan Wilkendorf is a stylist entirely in his own right.
"Open The Door" sets the tone right from the start. Wilkendorf's guitar takes center stage, engaging in a dialogue with itself, while keyboards provide an atmospheric backdrop. "Val de Robles" is even more sparsely instrumented, yet Wilkendorf manages to create an impressive richness of sound with his instrument—sometimes doubled—that leaves plenty of room to breathe while remaining clearly defined. Jan Wilkendorf is no egomaniacal guitar wizard; he allows the tones to resonate and fade out naturally.
The eight-minute title track expands the arrangement, introducing driving drums, varied percussion, a solid bass foundation, wordless vocal accompaniment, flute passages, a bass solo, and electric guitars. Everything is smooth and flowing, with a strong resemblance to folk-rock-inspired Metheny pieces. Eight minutes with no filler.
The following track, "Revelations," is almost as long, with a touch of classical influence—a melancholic nocturne that oscillates between intimate soirée and orchestral flow. Another highlight. "In Between" raises the jazz factor, particularly benefiting from the elaborate saxophone contributions. "Dunkle Pfade" ("Dark Paths") is, as the title suggests, a somber, introspective piece for acoustic guitar. With the more opulent "Were I Belong," the momentum picks up again, only to gracefully conclude with the agile "Home."
The final track, "Meditation," once more lends resonant significance to individual tones, accompanied by a slow, pulse-like rhythm. Somewhere between Fado melancholy and reflections on transience, it provides a fitting, soulful conclusion.
VERDICT: Jan Wilkendorf's "Manifestations" is a dreamlike album—profound, heartfelt, highly melodic, yet never saccharine. Packed with intricate acoustic craftsmanship that doesn’t exist for its own sake but contributes to a well-balanced, resonant whole. Delicate jazz, combined with worldly folk and a pinch of rock: an impressive solo debut.
